Wisconsin Healthy Grown®

Two-thirds of U.S. land is privately-owned — and the majority of that land is used for agriculture. Agricultural practices on our farms impacts the world around us.

That’s why, in the early 90’s, the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association (WPVGA) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison began looking at ways to advance the industry’s conservation and sustainability standards. In 1996, WPVGA partnered with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and later joined forces with the International Crane Foundation (ICF), and the Defenders of Wildlife to establish the Wisconsin Eco-Potato partnership. The result was a new brand launched in 2002 and a sustainable standard for growing potatoes — Wisconsin Healthy Grown.

Our Wisconsin Healthy Grown sustainable farmers work with ecologists, conservationists and University of Wisconsin researchers to:

  • Utilize and find better, less-invasive ways to manage pests and invasive plants
  • Restore natural ecosystems
  • Prevent erosion
  • Support native plants and animals
  • Conserve quality water
  • Improve potato production

In 2016, the program expanded and began applying the Wisconsin Healthy Grown standard to onions. Discussions are ongoing to broaden the program further and include additional crops in the near future. For additional information on the program’s background, details on standard and implementation as well as updates, take a look at the following videos we have on this page, courtesy of Wisconsin Potatoes.

Discover Their Story

Alsum Farms & Produce Inc. is a leading fresh-market grower, packer, and shipper of Wisconsin-grown potatoes and onions, and a provider of fresh, quality produce. Established five decades ago and headquartered in Friesland, Wis., Alsum Farms & Produce is a vertically integrated, family-owned farm, packing facility, and logistics company. Committed to sustainability and stewardship of the soil, Alsum Farms grows 3,000 acres of Wisconsin Healthy Grown® Certified potatoes, along with pumpkins.

The Alsum story began from five decades ago in a 600 square foot potato shed, with one man, Glenn Alsum, one vision, and a work ethic framed by dedication and service. Today, there are 350,000 square feet of sheds and production space, almost 325 full-time and seasonal employees, and 200,000,000 pounds of potatoes produced annually and that doesn’t include onions, pumpkins and other fresh produce that are distributed to grocery stores and warehouse retailers across the country.

And that work ethic? It’s still framed by dedication, a commitment to service, and a belief in providing a field-to-fork, vertically integrated business approach that incorporates growing and harvesting, production, packaging, and distribution, all under the umbrella of unrelenting quality.
